Five more COVID-19 deaths reported

Manitoba reported five new deaths linked to COVID-19 on Thursday.

The province will stop posting daily updates on some of its online dashboards as of next week.

Online COVID-19 dashboards will no longer be available after March 31, stated a news release from the province. Information about COVID-19 will continue to be updated in weekly epidemiology reports found at gov.mb.ca/health/publichealth/surveillance/covid-19/index.html. Vaccine dashboards will continue to be updated.

The number of COVID-19 hospital and intensive care patients dropped Thursday. There are now 369 people in hospital, with 163 being treated for active COVID infections. There are 18 patients in intensive care, with 14 being treated for active COVID infections.

Despite the positive numbers, the province said as of Wednesday there have been 128 new hospitalizations, a 4.9 per cent increase compared to the previous week. The ICU also added 11 new patients, a 57.1 per cent increase from the previous week.

Manitoba added 209 new cases on Thursday, bringing the active case count to 3,689. However, health officials have said in previous comments there are likely far more unreported cases as at-home rapid tests are not included in the daily total.

In terms of vaccine rates, 86.4 per cent of eligible Manitobans have received at least one dose, 82.7 per cent are fully vaccinated and 44.6 per cent have received a booster.

Sump pump subsidy program to return

After a successful first year, the City of Brandon is bringing back its flood protection program early next month.

In response to the flooding of many basements after heavy rainfall in the summer of 2020, the city introduced a program last year to subsidize the installation of both sump pumps and backwater valves.

Approximately 200 fixtures were installed as a result.

Starting April 4, residents and businesses within city limits can once again apply to get up to 75 per cent of the cost of installation of those devices covered up to a maximum of $2,500 for sump pumps and pits and up to $1,500 for backwater valves.

To qualify, property owners must obtain a quote from a licensed plumber that outlines if a sump pump, backwater valve or both are being installed, a drawing illustrating the location of the device and where they’ll discharge, and apply for a flood protection permit at the A.R. McDiarmid building at 638 Princess Ave. or online at permits.brandon.ca.

Applications must be submitted by Nov. 30 with all work, paperwork and related inspections completed by Dec. 15.

For more information, the city encourages residents to reach out to building safety manager Murray Fischer at m.fischer@brandon.ca or by phone at 204-729-2151.
