Provincial hopefuls will square off in a number of debates in the coming weeks, giving Brandonites plenty of opportunities to hear directly from the candidates before they head to the polls on April 19.
The Brandon Friendship Centre will host a debate today for Brandon East and Brandon West candidates at 2 p.m. The event takes place at the Mahkaday Ginew Memorial Centre at 205 College Ave.
Next Tuesday, April 5, the public is invited to The Town Centre food court for the Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation debate set for 2 p.m. Housing and poverty issues will be front and centre.
On April 6, candidates will take part in a debate at Brandon University’s Harvest Hall at noon. The event will be hosted by Brandon University Students’ Union in partnership with the Canadian Federation of Students. Political scientist Kelly Saunders will moderate.
“Students’ voices, we need to hear them,” said Nick Brown, BUSU vice-president internal. “We’re the future … so we want the government to focus on us more than they do in terms of funding, and in terms of their plan going forward for how do we stop being students and enter the real world, and what’s the government going to do to help us get there?”
As of Tuesday, only Brandon East NDP incumbent Drew Caldwell and his Liberal challenger, Vanessa Hamilton, had confirmed their attendance. Progressive Conservative candidates Reg Helwer (Brandon West) and Len Isleifson (Brandon East) declined the invitation. Brandon West NDP candidate Linda Ross also declined, as she will be teaching at the time.
On Thursday, April 7, the provincial party leaders are in town. All three leaders — NDP’s Greg Selinger, Liberal Rana Bokhari and PC Brian Pallister— will be in the hot seat for a Brandon Chamber of Commerce debate at the Victoria Inn over the noon hour.
That same evening, Selinger and Bokhari will take part in a televised debate at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium at 7 p.m. Pallister declined, however the invitation remains open. The event is being hosted by The Brandon Sun and Westman Communications Group. It will be broadcast live on CKLQ radio and WCGtv.
On Tuesday, April 12, the Brandon Teachers’ Association and Brandon School Division will host a debate for Brandon East, Brandon West and Spruce Woods candidates at the Victoria Inn (Imperial Ballroom) at 8 p.m.
The Brandon Sun, Westman Communications Group and the Brandon Chamber of Commerce are teaming up to host a pair of debates on Thursday, April 14. Brandon West candidates are up first at 6 p.m., followed by Brandon East at 7:35 p.m. It will also be broadcast on WCGtv and CKLQ radio. The public is invited to attend the event at the Keystone Centre amphitheatre.
