CBC’s groundbreaking television series “Sort Of” has been honoured with a Peabody Award.

The Toronto-set story of a gender-fluid Pakistani-Canadian millennial was among this year’s winners of the prestigious prize, which recognizes 30 radio, TV and online programs that “powerfully reflect the pressing social issues and the vibrant emerging voices of our day.”

“Sort Of” follows co-creator, co-writer and executive producer Bilal Baig as Sabi Mehboob – a nanny by day and bartender by night who feels perpetually in transition in every part of their life, from career to family to sexuality.

The series was co-created by Fab Filippo and produced by CBC and U.S. streaming platform HBO Max.

The Peabody Awards said on Tuesday that “Sort Of” was chosen for its “blazingly original comedic sensibility and its tender portrait of a queer nonbinary individual embracing the multitudes they contain within.”

The show’s creators, Baig, Filippo and executive producer Jennifer Kawaja, filmed an acceptance speech from the set of season 2, acknowledging that recognition with a Peabody will expand the audience for the series.

“I think it really means a lot that the show is reaching people and I love that we’re making the show with so much care and generosity,” Baig said.
