The Souris Swinging Bridge has been closed to pedestrian traffic after ice floes damaged one of the supports on the west side this week.

On Thursday, a spokeswoman with the Souris town office confirmed the closure of the bridge, but officials have been unable to determine the extent of the damage due to continued high water levels on the Souris River.

While the ice has gone further downstream, the river has not yet crested, and it’s unknown at this point whether the bridge will sustain further damage.

Once town officials have dealt with concerns regarding the ongoing high water levels, they will be able to better assessment the damage to the bridge.

The historic bridge was first built in 1904 to connect the two banks of the Souris River and was rebuilt in 1977 after being destroyed in the flood of 1976.
