PELICAN NARROWS – Mounties in Saskatchewan say a suspect was arrested late Monday after a shooting in the northern community of Pelican Narrows that killed one person and seriously injured another.
RCMP say in an alert that police remain on scene to investigate the shooting, which took place near the community’s health clinic.
An active shooter alert was issued earlier Monday for an area around the community, and residents were asked to find a safe location and lock their doors.
Mounties have not provided details about the two victims but said no other injuries were reported.
Officers had been looking for a man who was described as wearing all-black clothing and a face covering, and was travelling on foot.
Pelican Narrows, a part of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, is about 500 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
In a statement, the Cree Nation says schools and the local band office will be closed for the rest of the week. The health centre will offer limited services to clients with serious medical needs.
It also says support is being made available to those in need.
“PBCN leadership recognizes that today’s events have deeply affected many members, including children, families, frontline health staff, education staff and community workers,” the statement says.
“This is a time for unity, care and support for one another. PBCN will continue working with our partners to protect the safety and wellbeing of Pelican Narrows members.”
