It has taken more than 850 volunteers working behind the scenes to make the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup go off without a hitch.

From transportation to security, all the bases have been covered by a dedicated volunteer.

"I’m so proud of how everybody’s pulled together, right from the top down," volunteer chairperson Roz Evason said. "My feeling is any good organization starts with good organizers. So you look at Jeff Cristall, Lois MacDonald and Bernie Chrisp … These people have put together good people, and of course the citizens of Brandon and area are just awesome."

As the 11-day tournament winds down today, the volunteers are still going strong.

"We’re feeling tired but very excited," support services chair Bernie Chrisp said. "We’re looking forward to the game … (The volunteers) are going to their shifts with a smile on their face and making people happy."

Large groups of volunteers were assigned to the Memorial Cup Village, VIP lounge, volunteer service, transportation, technology, hockey operations, security, sales and sponsorship, information services, decorations, among others.

"One of the busiest spots is transportation," Chrisp said. "We’re accommodating different people coming in, sponsors and teams … They come into Winnipeg airport and we’re driving in to Winnipeg to pick them up and bring them to our great city."

Not all volunteers were at the Keystone Centre. There are information services volunteers at the different hotels around Brandon, the Canadian Forces volunteers manned the military exhibits and the students and teachers came out to the Westman Hockey History room to teach others about the 60 CHL teams.

"The big thing is to … say thank you to the volunteers, and encourage them along," Chrisp said. "Tell them that they’re doing a great job. That makes it all worthwhile."

A volunteer appreciation night is scheduled for Wednesday at Houstons from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

"We’re looking forward to everybody coming out," Chrisp said. "We hope to have a real good response from the volunteers."
