Daily life has been a roller-coaster ride for Lucas and Charlotte Plett.

The Brandon couple, who already has an 18-month-old daughter, is expecting triplets, the first set here in 21 years.

Family spokesperson Lillian Weber has been keeping tabs on the young mother, who has had premature contractions and had to move to Winnipeg until after the birth.

"They did an ultrasound on Sunday morning and the babies seem healthy and doing well. They weigh more than three pounds now," Weber said.

Currently staying with her parents to be close to specialists, Charlotte and Lucas are hoping that the babies continue to grow.

Though the three-pound milestone is an important one, the babies’ development is still at a crucial stage.

"This is very exciting for us. The bigger they are, the better obviously because with preemies, that’s the case. If you can get them to three, heck even four pounds, that’s really good," Lucas said. "They can still have problems, but the fact that they’re still growing quite well is very heartening, to say the least."

While the babies are gaining weight and strength, Charlotte has been in and out of the hospital, and though she is feeling less and less comfortable, she knows that it is a small price to pay.

A few weeks ago, after a particularly frightening bout of contractions, the couple hit an emotional wall.

"Our specialist laid it on the line. He said: ‘It’s going to be really hard for you during the next few weeks, but I guarantee that if you think it’s emotionally draining now, think what it’d be like if your kids were born sick? That would be worse. The longer you can wait the better. This is short term,’" Lucas said. "So, we’re just waiting for things to happen."

The youth pastor at Richmond Park Church, Lucas has resigned from his position to stay home and help with the babies.

"Being a youth pastor involved evening work and he felt that with so many babies, it wouldn’t work very well," Weber said.

This summer, Weber has sold baked goods and chocolate bars to raise funds for the family.

Now, she is planning a large garage sale, to be held on Aug. 21, in the parking lot of the Trails West Inn.

Anyone wanting to contribute items for either the sale or the family can do so at the Trails West Inn, to Brenda’s attention.

As well, a trust fund has been set up in the family’s name at the Westoba Credit Union.
