After years of delay and construction, the long-awaited new 18th Street bridge over the Assiniboine River will officially open this afternoon.
The David Thompson Bridge, with twin two-lane spans over the river, replaces a narrow, aging bridge that only allowed a single lane of traffic each way.
The construction site became notorious in Brandon for lengthy bottlenecks and delays, which the official opening is expected to ameliorate.
Drew Caldwell, the NDP MLA for Brandon East, will be on hand to officially open the new bridge at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24. The ceremony will take place on the pedestrian walkway on the easy side of the northbound span of the bridge.
