After more than six years of planning, organizing and fundraising, the Russell and District Multiplex celebrated the multimillion-dollar project with an official sod-turning ceremony.

Although financing troubles beset the project at its outset when neighbouring municipalities withdrew their commitment to financially support the project — which then prompted organizers to double the amount borrowed to make up for the shortfall — planning committee chair Chris Radford says the project is now going forward full steam ahead.

"There’s going to be highs and lows in any major project," Radford said. "It’s a good feeling to get things officially underway. As much as we were looking forward to (the sod-turning ceremony), now we’re that much more anxious for the final ribbon-cutting."

With the foundation poured and a few walls now going up, construction of the $7-million facility is on schedule, on time and set for completion in August 2011, Radford said.

The project will see the community’s 62-year-old arena remodelled and an addition constructed to include heated seating for 810 souls, a fitness centre, walking track, banquet rooms and a theatre area.

During the demolition process, contractors discovered a "few neat items," which Radford says will be kept in a safe place and put into a time capsule once construction is complete.

Meantime, the summer lull is over and fundraising for the facility has once again taken off.

To date, $300,000 has been raised towards its $1.7-million goal, and Radford says now that the community can see progress at the site, excitement is mounting.

"We have a ways to go, but there’s action at the site now, and we’re confident that with some hard work, we’ll get (to $1.7-million goal,)" he said.
