Hawkweed Literary Forum at Brandon University, in conjunction with Theatre Projects Manitoba, present "Almighty Voice and His Wife" by acclaimed Ontario playwright Daniel David Moses, with direction by Michael Greyeyes, on the Evans Theatre stage Wednesday and Thursday.

The play tells the tale of a young couple — he is the historically significant Almighty Voice, a Saskatchewan Cree who was charged with killing a cow on Crown land in 1885, and she is his new wife.

Though they are blissfully in love, it is 1895 and they are members of the first generation following the Riel Rebellion. It is suddenly difficult for the people who followed the buffalo to live happily ever after. What are they going to do? It’s still a bit early to go into show business.

Submitted The Native Earth Performing Arts production of "Almighty Voice and His Wife{ takes the stage at Brandon University's Evans Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday.

"Almighty Voice and His Wife" shakes up a familiar story from the Saskatchewan frontier: The "renegade Indian story" transforms into both an eloquent tale of tragic love and an often hilarious, fully theatrical exorcism of the hurts of history, making it a modern classic about the place of First Nations people in Canada.

The play will be presented in Brandon on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 8 p.m., as well as at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

This touring production features Toronto’s Native Earth Performing Arts, Canada’s pre-eminent Aboriginal theatre company.

Tickets will be $22 for general admission, $18 for seniors and $15 for students.
