It will be a very profitable day today in Brantford for Manitoba curling’s Dawn Askin-Mike McEwen household.
Askin, the lead for Winnipeg skip Jennifer Jones, is in this afternoon’s women’s final of the $50,000 Sun Life Classic in Brantford, Ontario while her partner, Winnipeg skip Mike McEwen, is in the final of the $50,000 men’s event.
The Jones team advanced to the final this morning with a 7-3 win over Oakville’s Kirsten Wall in the women’s semi-finals, while McEwen advanced with a 5-2 win over Woodstock’s Mark Kean in the men’s semi-finals.
Jones will face former teammate and longtime rival Kelly Scott of B.C. in the women’s final. McEwen will face Newfoundland’s Brad Gushue team, who have Edmonton’s Randy Ferbey skipping but throwing third rock.
Meanwhile, Jeff Stoughton’s team is looking to prove today in Stonewall that they can win even without the Winnipeg skip throwing the last rock.
Stoughton sat out this weekend’s Interlake Pharmacy Classic but Stoughton’s third Jon Mead, second Reid Carruthers and lead Steve Gould gave it a go anyway with a reconfigured team that saw icemaker Eric Montford recruited to skip and throw second stone while Carruthers took over last-rock duties.
The team will play Sean Grassie in the semi-finals at the Stonewall Curling Club today at 4:30 p.m. The other semi-final will see David Bohn play Garth Smith.
In the women’s event in Stonewall, Shauna Streich will play Holly Scott while Jill Thurston plays Barb Spencer in the semi-finals. Those games will also take place at 4:30 p.m.
Both finals in Stonewall are scheduled for 7 p.m.
