Thirteen psychiatric nurses assembled at the Brandon University campus late last week to be the very first in the country to embark on a master of psychiatric nursing program.
The unique program, first developed by Brandon University, has been in the works for years, and follows in the footsteps of the university’s introduction of Canada’s first bachelor of psychiatric nursing program launched in 1995.
“The course work is going to be done online through Moodle (a course management system), and so we wanted the students together to get to know them and for them to know us because so much of being a graduate student is the experience and the working together as peers,” said Dr. W. Dean Care, the dean of the School of Health Studies at Brandon University.
The master of psychiatric nursing program is the first graduate program launched by the School of Health Studies.
Each of the nurses, who hail from different parts of Western Canada, including the Brandon region, have chosen one of three streams — education, administration or clinical practice.
