A Brandon resident who was born in Libya is helping to organize a rally at the Manitoba Legislature to support the people of that country.

Boshra Mohamed says that the rally is an important way to bring attention to the crackdown over the ongoing protests in Libya, where Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has vowed to fight those who are demanding his ouster.

Mohamed, a first-year student at Brandon University, says that the mass protests are a first in the 42-year history of Gadhafi rule.

“This [rally] will raise awareness of these issues,” she said in a press release. “Help us inform the world, and broadcast our efforts … we need our message heard by as many ears as possible.”

Organizers of the rally point out that members of the international press have been shut out of Libya. And, with no independent journalists in the country, the only news coming out is from cell phone videos, pictures, and phone calls from ordinary Libyan citizens.

The rally is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 22, beginning at 4 p.m. in front of the Manitoba Legislature in Winnipeg.
