After almost exactly eight years, police in Dauphin say that the 2003 disappearance of a young man was murder. Two suspects are in custody.
Dauphin resident Derek James Kembel was reported missing by his family on March 10, 2003. He was 25 at the time, and hadn’t been heard from in over a week. He had last been seen leaving a Dauphin bar on the evening of Feb. 28, 2003.
On Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, police arrested Christopher Robin Shewchuk, 29, and charged him with first degree murder in connection with the case. Shewchuk is a resident of the R.M. of Mountain. He is in custody, and is scheduled to appear in Winnipeg court.
In addition, Thomas Ronald Shewchuk, 60, has been arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to murder. He is also in custody, and is to appear in Dauphin court.
Although Kembel’s body has not been found, evidence gathered in the RCMP investigation supports that Christopher Robin Shewchuk is responsible for Kembel’s death. Police say they won’t be releasing details surrounding the death at this time.
RCMP members are continuing the investigation. No further information is available at this time.
