Free internet access over a public Wi-Fi network will help attract people to downtown Brandon, and a new suite of "street furnishings" will help keep them there.

At least, that’s the $144,000 plan unveiled today by Renaissance Brandon and the provincial government.

"Brandon is a great city with a proud history and we want to help its citizens fulfil their long-term vision for a strong economy and vibrant downtown," said Manitoba premier Greg Selinger, who was in downtown Brandon to hand over the money.

"Wireless Internet will help revitalize businesses while the new enhanced streetscaping will make working and visiting downtown a more pleasant experience."

Brandon’s mayor agreed with the premier.

"A tech-savvy downtown provides people with the opportunity to access their email or browse online while sitting outside or in a cafe," Shari Decter Hirst said. "It is another reason why downtown is a great place to live, work or play.
