“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Daniel, Brayden, and Yannick and our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to their families.” LCol Shane Schreiber, Commanding Officer of 2PPCLI, said in a prepared statement released this afternoon. “They were excellent soldiers, friends and young men, and they will be very much missed by their comrades in the Regiment.”

One other soldier was injured in the crash and he remains in hospital.

A Forces spokeswoman said funeral services for Privates Scoular and MacLachlan and Corporal Wright will be held in accordance with the wishes of their families. 2 PPCLI will hold a separate memorial service for the three men at a later date.

The four soldiers were in a 2003 Ford Escape travelling westbound on Provincial Road 457 when it crossed a bridge over Willow Creek at about 12:30 a.m. The driver of the vehicle lost control, hit the guard rail and flipped over, landing on its roof in the creek.

One of the soldiers in the rear was able to get out and made his way back to the road for help.

RCMP said weather conditions at the time were poor as the area had received heavy snow during the late afternoon and into the evening.

The deaths were among six now attributed to the storm. Shortly after that accident, a pick-up truck with five people crashed in Hamiota, killing three of the occupants. The truck skidded into a ditch and struck a tree.

Two of the dead in Hamiota crash were identified as Torey Haggerty, 23, and Casey Brown, 35, of the RM of Woodworth.
