A Brandon Sun photographer has earned four more major awards for his picture-taking skills.
Tim Smith took first place in both the portrait/personality and photograph of the year categories for his photo of Hutterites in a canola field at the annual News Photographers Association of Canada’s National Pictures of the Year awards ceremony in Winnipeg on Saturday night.
Smith also won in the pictorial category for his picture of Hutterite children playing on hay bales with a rainbow behind them and in the feature category for a picture of a couple hugging.
The photograph of the Hutterite children recently won Smith a top honour at the National Newspaper Awards.
Smith, who joined the Sun in October 2007, was nominated for photojournalist of the year but lost to Tyler Anderson of the National Post.
"It felt great to be here among my peers whose work I admire," Smith said. "And then to win a few awards is a humbling thing … They were all photos I loved, and at the end of the day that’s all that really matters."
Photographer Phil Hossack of the Sun’s sister paper, the Winnipeg Free Press, came second in the pictorial category for a photo of lights above the city, while the Free Press’ award-winning series, No Running Water, placed second in the team multimedia category.
"It’s the emerging media in journalism, and it’s an honour to be among the top of the heap in the country," said Joe Bryksa, who captured the photos that accompanied the series.
No Running Water, which also included stories and video features in the newspaper and on the Free Press’s website, shone a spotlight on the lack of clean water and proper sewage facilities at the aboriginal communities in the Island Lakes area.
Free Press freelance photographer David Lipnowski finished second in the portrait category for his picture of a jockey with a horse.
