Saying “it just felt like the right time,” Brandon Wheat Kings owner and general manager Kelly McCrimmon has given up the coaching reins of the Western Hockey League team, hiring Cory Clouston as the club’s new head coach.

Clouston spent the last two and a half seasons as the head coach of the Ottawa Senators before being fired by the National Hockey League club this spring. He also spent five seasons as the head coach of the WHL’s Kootenay Ice and said Brandon was the right fit.

“I think probably the biggest reason was Kelly and the organization and the success that they had here,” Coulston said at a news conference on Wednesday. “It’s a good young team, I think there’s room to grow with the team, but I think it’s a team that’s ready to be a real solid team right now.”

McCrimmon has recorded 330 victories behind the Wheat Kings bench, including a 294-177-35 record since replacing Mike Kelly in March, 2004.

Clouston had a 95-83-20 record in the NHL with the Senators and a 209-114-37 mark with the Ice.
