THE short list for who’ll ride herd on MLAs in the Manitoba legislature as the new Speaker will be known today.

The deadline for MLAs who want to put their name in to the clerk’s office for the position is Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

The short list for the job right now includes NDP MLAs Erna Braun (Rossmere), Daryl Reid (Transcona), Greg Dewar (Selkirk) and Tom Nevakshonoff (Interlake).

The most likely scenario will see the majority NDP submit only one MLA’s name for the Speaker’s job so the selection process is quick and seamless.

A new Speaker is needed with the retirement of George Hickes, who held the post for almost 12 years. Speakers of the Manitoba legislature are elected in a free vote of all MLAs — not appointed by government.

The position is vital to the workings of the legislature as the Speaker acts as referee and timekeeper during question period and debates.
