Brandon University Students Union president Deandra Tousignant demanded Brandon University’s chief negotiator Grant Mitchell and Brandon University Faculty Association president Joe Dolecki both resign to encourage an end to the now 38-day faculty strike.
“It’s evident that both negotiators have dug in their heels and we need the playing field to be fair, so we need both negotiators to step down so students can have an agreement,” BUSU president Deandra Tousignant said. “It’s already been 37 days, so we think we need new faces at the table and we think this will definitely get us an agreement.
“We expect both chief negotiators will step down.”
Dolecki said he would quit as BUFA’s lead negotiator, if Mitchell did the same, provided certain conditions were met.
“If Mr. Mitchell will terminate his contract with the university, and if Mr. Mitchell will release the content of his contract, and if Mr. Mitchell undertakes under oath not to have anything to do with their bargaining team at all, it goes away, then sure I would be willing to step aside.”
Mitchell said he had never heard of that kind of situation before.
“It’s interesting (Dolecki) made that announcement before the BUSU had their press conference, and it makes one wonder where the idea came from, whether it came from Mr. Dolecki or from BUSU,” Mitchell said. “Whether either party changes their chief negotiator is a decision for either side to make. Certainly who the negotiator for the university is a decision for the university to make. Until I’m told otherwise, I will do everything in my power to find an agreement. I don’t know if it would make a difference. I’m biased, but I don’t think my involvement has stood in the way of an agreement.”
When asked if resignations would make any difference in the pace of negotiations, Dolecki said, “No.”
If Dolecki and Mitchell remain in their posts, BUSU will “continue to pressure both parties to consider our request,” Tousignant said.
“We feel this is absolutely a reasonable request and that it will help negotiations.”
