DAUPHIN — Rob Fowler’s Brandon-based team has ended Westman’s 22-year drought in men’s curling.

Fowler and his Brandon Curling Club team of Allan Lyburn, Richard Daneault and Derek Samagalski defeated former Brandonite Mike McEwen 10-6 in the Safeway Championship final and became the first Westman-based team to reach the Brier since Deloraine’s Duane Edwards represented the province in the 1990 national championship.

Fowler’s father, Brian, was the last Brandon skip to win the provincial men’s title, leading his Brandon Curling Club team to the Brier in 1987.

Fowler hoped to end the dry spell when he formed this team last season and feels winning his first purple heart as a skip has made his dream come true.

“When the decision was made to go out and start skipping on my own, that was my main focus,” said Fowler, who competed in the 2007, 2009 and 2010 Briers as Jeff Stoughton’s second. “It’s great to go out on the cash circuit and win money, but at the end of the day money can’t buy a purple heart. To win and bring it back to Westman is absolutely awesome.”

Fowler secured the win with a steal of two in the 10th end when McEwen missed a difficult triple takeout.

The Brandonite had a rough road to the final. He was victorious in four must-win games against seeded teams — including defending world champion Stoughton, Brandon Sun Westman Super League of Curling champion Terry McNamee and former Brandonite William Lyburn — just to play McEwen, the money and points leader on the World Curling Tour, in the final.

Fowler admitted he would have liked an easier path to the title, but he feels his team took advantage of its situation.

“When momentum is on your side, sometimes it can be a big advantage and that definitely showed in those five games,” he said.
