Residents of western Manitoba will soon be able to write a personal Diamond Jubilee message of congratulations to Queen Elizabeth II.
A replica of the commemorative book of celebration, which debuted on Feb. 6 at the Manitoba Legislative Building, will be set up in the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba in Brandon on April 2 and remain there for the entire month before being relocated to Churchill at the Town Centre Complex on May 7. This book will then move to Steinbach in June with additional communities to be announced in the coming weeks.
The book will be officially unveiled at 11 a.m. at the AGSM in a special ceremony with members of the legislative assembly Drew Caldwell and Reg Helwer, and Brandon Mayor Shari Decter-Hirst in attendance.
"This province has a long, historic and very positive relationship with the Royal Family, in particular with Her Majesty," said Lt.-Gov. Philip Lee, who announced the book’s shcedule in a press release with Premier Greg Selinger earlier today. "Her visits to Manitoba as a princess and as Queen of Canada for more than 60 years have cultivated a very special, undeniable bond with the people of this province."
In making the announcement, the premier also reminded all Manitobans the original commemorative book of celebration at the Legislative Building will remain in place until Sept. 1 and that messages of congratulations can still be sent online through the provincial government’s website at manitoba.ca.
"Throughout the coming year, we will circulate this book of congratulatory messages to a number of centres in the province," Selinger said. "The Diamond Jubliee is a milestone that is not likely to be repeated in our lifetime and it is important that we recognize the importance of this event."
