Manitoba’s municipal officials will hear about the next phase of federal infrastructure funding when they gather at the Association of Manitoba Municipalities’ municipal officers seminar at the Keystone Centre this week.
Infrastructure, set to be a speech topic of Federation of Canadian Municipalities CEO Brock Carlton on Thursday, is only one of the several professional development and information sessions scheduled.
“He’ll be talking about the next generation of infrastructure programs the FCM is working on with the federal government,” AMM executive director Joe Masi said. “Our organization is pretty plugged in to that process through our president (Doug Dobrowolski) and myself. (Carlton) will talk about the next generation of programs, but more importantly, he’ll be getting some feedback from our members on what maybe didn’t go so well with the last Building Canada program.”
Masi also anticipated some discussion about the recently signed agreements signed with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
“It is sort of a mid-term event after our November convention, and it’s two days of mostly workshops and education sessions,” Masi said.
“We have tied in a big trade show as well where people can come in on Tuesday, with heavy equipment and displays. It’s a pretty packed couple of days.”
The convention, which will be held Wednesday and Thursday, also gives the AMM a chance to update municipal officials on the progress of resolutions approved at the November convention.
Wednesday’s session will include a speech from Manitoba Local Government Minister Ron Lemieux.
While the conference officially opens on Wednesday, the event also includes a Good Roads Banquet today, during which awards are handed out to honour the best roads in the province.
