Brandon scouts hope fellow citizens have been following their cue in performing a good deed this week during Scouts Canada’s third annual Good Turn Week.

Good Turn Week happens once a year and provides an opportunity for scouting groups to highlight the good work they do for Canadian communities. It also inspires others to make time for their own simple acts of kindness.

Each Scouts Canada member has received a Good Turn Week bracelet. When they have completed their “Good Turn,” they pass the bracelet on to the person they helped and encourage them do so as well.

The 18th Scouts in Brandon handed out their bracelets during a meeting last week, and as more good deeds get done, they will begin to circulate throughout the community. Every level of scouting is participating in the program.

“This initiative helps not only the older kids but the young kids, too, most often it is kids that need help,” said 18th Brandon Scouts commissioner Shirley Smith.

This year, Smith says the 18th Brandon Scouts will be conducting a spring tree planting in May in conjunction with Good Turn Week.

The Brandon Scouts have not yet chosen a location to do their annual spring tree planting.

Last year, they planted on the North Hill area with all groups participating. On Wednesday, 18th Brandon went out tree canvassing to prepare for the upcoming annual plant.

The 23rd Brandon Scouts handed their bracelets out two weeks ago and group commissioner Ian Deg said the wristbands have already found their way into the community.

“The bands were handed out two weeks ago, we gave out 35 to every youth in our program,” Deg said.

Good Turn Week is meant to give scouting groups good exposure within the community

Souris Scouts have had their bracelets in the community for a week and they have had good success getting out into the community.

“We gave out 28 through all levels in our program. It is a good way to give back to the community,” Souris commissioner Albert Swaenepoel said.

Good Turn Week holds true to the principles of scouting: to always help others.

There are many ways to perform a good turn from helping someone cross the street to performing chores for a neighbour.

Canadians can share their good turns on the Scouts Canada website by texting “Good Turn” with a description to 51051.

Scouts Canada’s Good Turn Week wraps up tomorrow.
