Students from Assiniboine Community College and Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School brought home a bagload of hardware from the 15th annual Skills Manitoba competition held in Winnipeg April 12.

More than 30 ACC students competed, with nearly half bringing home medals. Team ACC captured honours in a variety of categories, winning six gold, five silver and three bronze.

Meanwhile, Crocus Plains students won 15 medals, including four gold.

The gold medal winners now have the opportunity to join Team Manitoba, and travel to Edmonton on May 12-16 to compete in the 18th Canada National Skills Competition.

Those who bring home gold on the national stage could be asked to represent Canada at the World Skills Competition in Leipzig, Germany, in 2013.

The skills competition, a time-limited contest, is an impressive display of hands-on expertise and talent that showcases the diversity in the trades and technology fields, as well as the many exciting careers to be had in these occupations.

More than 500 secondary and post-secondary students from across the province competed in 40 different contests while supported by 300 volunteers.

The following ACC students were awarded medals:

• Cooking: Kara Smith — Bronze

• Electrical Installation: Mark Calvert — Gold

• Geographic Information Systems: Jordan Twerdun — Gold

• Heavy Equipment Service: Robert Prettie — Gold

• IT Network Systems Admin: Chad O’Dow — Gold

• IT Software Solutions: Marlee Buhler — Silver; Kourtney Strandlund — Bronze

• Mechanical CAD: Branden Smith — Silver

• Plumbing: Kelly Semenko — Silver

• Precision Machining: Brendan Cook — Gold; Daniel R Young — Silver

• Website Development: Jesse Kernaghan — Gold; Alyssa Fraser — Silver; Jocelyn Fenty — Bronze

Crocus Plains students also won their medals in a variety of categories, including Autobody Painting, Autobody Repair, Cabinet Making, Architectural Tech & Design, Auto CAD 2D, Mechanical 3D, Robotics, Photography and Electronics. The top medal winners included:

• Autobody Painting: Sean Simpson — Gold

• Auto CAD 2D: Justin Buhr — Gold

• Mechanical 3D: Kyle Logan — Gold

• Electronics: Colby Bramley — Gold
