Canadian rap rockers Down With Webster have been announced as the headliners for the seventh annual Rock the Block festival.
The Toronto-based group will share the bill with fellow Torontonian hard rock band My Darkest Days and with Canadian legends April Wine.
“We’ve listened a lot to what students were saying … and we tried to pay attention to what people wanted,” said Brandon University Students’ Union president Carissa Taylor. “Down With Webster was a name that kept coming up … so we knew we wanted to pursue them, and we were able to secure them … and we’re really happy about that.”
Down With Webster released their first official EP, “Time to Win, Vol. 1” in 2009, and all three singles — “Your Man,” “Rich Girl$” and “Whoa Is Me” — have been certified platinum in Canada. The band has been nominated for Juno awards, MuchMusic Video Awards and Canadian Radio Music Awards.
BUSU puts on the popular downtown event, which shuts down Rosser Avenue for an evening. Taylor said organizers hope to draw an audience of many ages with the wide variety of bands.
“We have April Wine, and we thought that would be something for the older demographic that we wouldn’t normally hit,” she said. “A lot of people are still really into their music, so we thought that was something that would be different and exciting.”
April Wine formed in 1969 and have released more than 20 albums. My Darkest Days was founded in 2005. They were discovered by Chad Kroeger of Nickelback, who signed them to his record label, 604 Records.
Taylor said BUSU spent a bit more on bands this year in an effort to bring out a large audience.
“I feel really positive about this year, and about the response we’ve received,” she said.
“The more that we can have it be a successful event, the more we’re going to be able to do in coming years. If the community supports this kind of thing, then it’s something we can continue and make bigger every year.”
The 18-plus event takes place Sept. 14 and people are reminded to bring their IDs.
Three thousand tickets went on sale Tuesday, and are $30 in advance or $35 at the gate, but students get $5 off those prices.
For tickets, call the BUSU office at 727-9660. Anyone who buys a ticket this week will get one entry per ticket into a draw to win an iPad. The draw will take place at Rock the Block.
One lucky local band will open the festival, determined by a Battle of the Bands. Act of Divide, Days of Anarchy and Former KGB play tonight at The 40. Out F’Sync, Beneath It All and The Young Pixels play Aug. 15.
The winners from both nights will battle it out on Aug. 22. The top band opens for Rock the Block and will win $500.
