For creating a healthy and happy workplace at Rideau Park Personal Care Home, Amy Noto has been named the recipient of the 2012 Best Boss award.
The award was handed out Friday in a special presentation at the care home, which came as a complete shock to Noto.
“I did not know at all … I’m feeling a little bit surprised but very grateful,” Noto said after receiving a plaque and certificate of acknowledgement. “I’m so thankful to work with the staff that I work with. It’s just very sweet of them.”
Noto has been the nutrition services manager for the past two years at Rideau Park. She works with roughly 20 staff members, who nominated her for the award.
“She’s always pitching in, comes in on holidays and she’s just always really good to us,” said dietary aide Bev Ward. “She always has a smile and makes you want to do things for her … She’s been the best.”
Noto said she enjoys working at Rideau Park and encourages others to take care of themselves so they can do their best at work.
“Our work here is really important … Everyone really loves the residents and that’s why we’re all here,” she said. “I think when we all keep that goal in mind, we’re all a happy bunch and it’s very nice to work here.”
This is the 15th year for the award, which is handed out as a way to mark Mental Illness Awareness Week. It’s awarded by Western RHA Mental Health Services and the Brandon Chamber of Commerce.
“The award is based on managers or bosses that promote mental health and wellness in the workplace,” said community mental health nurse Cara Miller. “I think it’s essential to have a healthy and happy workplace for good morale … They’re promoting good communication in the workplace, promoting taking breaks when you should, don’t work too hard and don’t come to work when you’re sick. It sounds like (Noto is) a very approachable gal and supports her employees.”
Carolynn Cancade, chamber of commerce general manager, said Noto received many heart-felt nominations from her staff members.
“It’s important to recognize those leaders or managers that are making workplace environments that encourage and bring out the best in people, so I think that’s really great,” Cancade said.
