A man who went on a shoplifting spree to support his drug addiction will serve his time on house arrest.
Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta noted that the offender had allowed his addiction to affect others.
His crimes harmed the businesses he stole from and served to drive up prices for consumers in general.
“You’re hurting other people, you’re not just hurting yourself,” Hewitt-Michta said.
Larry Donald Letain, 32, was sentenced on Thursday for four counts of theft.
He stole two packs of chicken worth $61 from Heritage Co-op on Feb. 17, then running shoes and a hat from Sport Chek on May 9, and $24 worth of snacks and drinks from 7-Eleven on May 22.
The shoes and hat were recovered and returned to Sport Chek.
Letain also stole $225 worth of meat from Safeway on July 18. By the time police caught up with him, the meat had spoiled and had to be thrown out.
Letain has a previous criminal record for theft.
Defence lawyer Philip Sieklicki said Letain would steal to support a drug addiction.
Either he was stealing to get food because he’d spent money on drugs, or he’d steal to get money to obtain drugs.
Letain had turned to drugs due to a series of tragedies and unfortunate events in his life, Sieklicki explained.
However, Sieklicki asked Hewitt-Michta to impose a suspended sentence (a form of probation) because of Letain’s committed effort to seek help and change.
Letain has distanced himself from other addicts and has taken various forms of treatment and counselling, Sieklicki said.
He’s also on methadone program intended to help wean addicts off of drugs.
Hewitt-Michta said Letain’s crimes and his record were too serious for her to impose a suspended sentence.
Instead, she placed him on four months house arrest to be followed by one year of probation.
Letain also has to do 30 hours of community service work, make a $300 donation to charity or do a combination of both.
