A young man killed in Cross Lake, Man., on the weekend is the nephew of an elder on a hunger strike to advance aboriginal issues.
Band officials confirmed the identity of Austin Monias, 19, who died early Sunday morning from injuries he suffered while at a house party in the northern community.
RCMP officers were called to a home in the community at 6 a.m. Sunday, where they found the young man suffering from life-threatening injuries.
The man was taken to the local nursing station but later died from his injuries.
RCMP said Monias’ death is the seventh homicide of the year for the RCMP in Manitoba.
News reports said Monias is the nephew of elder Raymond Robinson, who is fasting in support of Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence.
Robinson could not be reached for comment.
