Manitoba’s wholesale sector posted the biggest provincial drop in sales in the country in December, Statistics Canada said today.
The agency said the province’s wholesalers shipped out $1.35 billion worth of goods during the month. That was a decline of 2.6 per cent from November’s total of $1.39 billion, although it was roughly on par with sales in the final month of 2011.
December’s decline followed a 4.6 per cent jump in sales in November.
Statistics Canada said Manitoba was one of six provinces to end the year on a down note. The other five saw declines ranging from 0.1 per cent to 2.5 per cent.
Canada saw its wholesale sales dip by 0.9 per cent to $49 billion after rising 0.7 per cent in November. Statistics Canada said the decrease was largely a result of lower sales of computer and communications equipment and supplies.
