A generous donation announced Friday will give the main gymnasium in Brandon University’s new Healthy Living Centre a name.
The Richardson Foundation donation could total $500,000. The foundation is the charitable arm of Winnipeg-based James Richardson & Sons Ltd. and affiliate companies.
The foundation has donated $250,000 and pledged to match every dollar Brandon University raises for the centre this year up to another $250,000.
This is the largest private donation made to the Healthy Living Centre project to date. In recognition of the gift, the main gymnasium in the recently completed HLC will be named the Richardson Gymnasium.
“Our firm and foundation have a long history with and connection to Brandon University,” said Hartley Richardson, president and chief executive officer of James Richardson & Sons Ltd., and a trustee of the Richardson Foundation. “We are extremely pleased to be part of BU’s latest campaign and provide our support for this important community project.”
Brandon University president and vice-chancellor Deborah Poff said she is confident that the fundraising efforts throughout the remainder of 2014 will exceed the $250,000 that the Richardson Foundation will match.
“We are absolutely thrilled by the Richardson Foundation’s donation,” Poff said yesterday. “This will go a long way to finishing the costs.”
Although the building is finished, Poff said another $1 million is needed to cover the costs.
A new fundraising campaign will kick off next weekend to name the seats in the newly named Richardson Gymnasium. The gymnasium has 1,038 seats and the campaign could raise up to $800,000, Poff said .
The Healthy Living Centre, completed in 2013 at a cost of $24.3 million, was built through contributions from federal, provincial and municipal governments, and private donors contributing to BU’s BUILD fundraising campaign.
