Construction has already begun on a $1.5-million expansion at the Morris Industries plant in Minnedosa.
The company will be adding another 8,000 square feet to the already existing 75,000-square-foot plant. The extra space will house a new paint line for painting the company’s 9 Series Air Cart’s frames and metallic silver clear coat tanks. It will also provide increased capacity for additional assembly of the air carts including the new ICT overlap control technology.
“We are expanding to boost capacity, improve our product finish and improve the quality of the product delivered to our dealers and customers,” Morris Industries CEO Don Henry said in a press release Thursday.
Morris Industries is an agricultural equipment manufacturer that develops “farmer-inspired, innovated technology.” The company is headquartered in Saskatoon and has two manufacturing facilities, with the larger of the two in Yorkton, Sask. The Minnedosa plant employs 88 people.
Though the plant expansion won’t immediately translate into a need for more employees, company spokesman Darrel Schindel said the expansion will be a stabilizing initiative for the company’s Manitoba staff.
“In the short term, we can’t suggest we will be hiring more people,” Schindel said. “But what we’re doing is conducting more work, and containing it more in Minnedosa than in the Yorkton facility. It’s a more integrated production.
“In the future, of course, if market conditions become even more robus, that will dictate getting more people in Minnedosa.”
Construction of the plant expansion began earlier this month, and will be completed by November with the paint line operational by December.
