In a scene right out of “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” holiday travellers were stranded in Brandon yesterday.
The Brandon-bound plane coming from Calgary was supposed to arrive at approximately 12:30 p.m., however, it couldn’t duck the thick fog in the area long enough to land.
The plane circled McGill Field for about an hour before turning back and landing in Regina, where it also refuelled, according to a WestJet official.
There was some hope that the flight could be rescheduled for later Sunday evening, but with weather patterns expected to remain consistently bad, WestJet told flyers shortly after 4 p.m. that the flight was cancelled.
During the delay, some flyers took the time to catch a snooze in the waiting room, others got up and stretched their legs, while some groups made alternative plans, which included booking rental cars to drive west and get on another flight.
Danny Robertson was flying to Calgary with his wife, Lori, and daughter, Melissa.
Robertson was going to visit his son, Terry, who lives in The Stampede City.
“We’re going to spend the holidays with him, well, maybe,” Robertson joked while standing at the security entrance to the airport’s waiting room still holding out hope the flight would go ahead.
He drove into Brandon from Killarney earlier in the day.
“It was clear in Killarney, but as soon as we hit Wawanesa, you couldn’t see anything,” he said.
Much of Westman was intermittently under fog warnings issued by Environment Canada throughout the weekend.
Other vehicles were left abandoned in the ditch along highways, as the moisture settled and created slippery driving conditions.
Robertson wasn’t stressed out about the delay. His daughter lives in Shilo and he said they could easily spend the night there and fly out today.
“We’ll get there, we’ll get there,” he said.
The flight was rescheduled later, with two flights expected to leave Brandon today.
