A new fundraising campaign has been launched for the Strand Theatre restoration project.

The Brandon Folk, Music and Art Society officially announced the Light Up The Stage! campaign Thursday, following a soft launch last week.

“The campaign ‘roots’ have been planted with a revamped website featuring new artwork by Brandon artist Tim Brown, a project Q and A that visitors can submit their questions to, an overview of the facility that describes the new phased plan, and the Light Up The Stage! campaign page,” states the press release.

The new campaign offers donors different perks donated by artists from across the country, local organizations and businesses.

“This allows artists and businesses to support the campaign by giving their time and talents. It’s like the idea of a silent auction at a fundraising event, except you can engage at your home computer or even on your phone,” said Shandra MacNeill, chair of the BFMAS board of directors.

Perks for donating to the cause include tickets to local theatre, artwork, catering, custom poems, and house concerts by nationally recognized artists, along with naming rights for larger donations.

“By following the crowdfunding models, popularized over the last few years through websites like IndieGoGo and KickStarter, the BFMAS invites every level of donors to have a little fun as they help build a performance and art centre for the community,” states the release.

Another way to donate to the campaign is through countertop donation boxes designed by local artist Chris Reid. They can be found at 20 Brandon locations, including Two Farm Kids, the Wildflower Cafe and Sobeys West End.

“There will be more public events, such as open houses and tours in the near future, but we wanted to start with a community-driven grassroots campaign which illustrates the level of support the city has for the project and encourages those who want to be involved to get in touch with us,” MacNeill said.

The Light Up The Stage! campaign follows the Strand’s Raising the Curtain campaign, which was launched in November 2013, but never really got off the ground. The goal is to redevelop the historic downtown theatre into a multi-use community performance and arts centre.
