RCMP rose to the occasion after a bread truck smashed through a bridge guard rail into the frigid waters below.
The truck cab landed upright in the water, but the trailer tipped and spread its cargo of bread into the Assiniboine River just after midnight this morning at the Grand Valley Bridge.
The eastbound semi-truck was attempting to pass another vehicle at the time of the crash in the RM of Whitehead, police say.
Water rescue personnel were able to get the driver safely to shore. The 49-year-old male driver from Winnipeg suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to local hospital. Alcohol and speed are not considered factors in the collision.
A RCMP forensic collision reconstructionist is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
No word on how much bread was lost.
