Small towns really like their larger-than-life landmarks and Travel Manitoba is pitting them against each other.

In an online poll, 32 roadside landmarks — from Tommy the Turtle in Boissevain to Churchill’s polar bear — are squaring off and the ones with the most votes get through to the next round in a bracket style.

Travel Manitoba says it was inspired by NCAA’s March Madness, but there’s no top prize, other than bragging rights.

As of Monday, one round was already completed and Boissevain’s shelled pride was bumped by the humps of the Glenboro camel. But the first round wasn’t all bad news for Westman’s landmarks. Votes for Melita’s giant banana topped Altona’s Van Gogh sunflowers, the Holland windmill blew away Roland’s pumpkin and Austin’s antique tractor rolled over Steinbach’s Rolls Royce.

The final eight will be updated today on Travel Manitoba’s blog site, manitobahot.com.
