Construction on a new, 6,400-square-foot gymnasium at Green Acres School is slated to begin next spring.

Premier Greg Selinger made a stop at the kindergarten to Grade 8 school on Thursday to talk about the details of the project, which was first announced in 2011.

“We are investing throughout the province to create high-quality learning spaces in our schools so that students can succeed,” Selinger said. “This gymnasium expansion will encourage students to get active and participate in a variety of sports and physical education programs.”

Tenders are expected to go out this fall, with shovels in the ground by the following spring. The construction phase will take at least a year to complete.

Children gathered in the gym for the announcement, enthusiastically cheering on the special guests — Selinger, Brandon School Division chair Mark Sefton, Municipal Government Minister and Brandon East NDP MLA Drew Caldwell and their own gym teacher, Glenn Steele.

“As students, we’re often asked to balance a lot of different aspects in our life. We have to balance our academics, our social/emotional health as well as our personal health and our fitness,” Steele said. “Having this … new gymnasium is going to help us achieve success in all three of those things.”

The existing gym is roughly 2,100 square feet in size, which hinders the type of activity that can be hosted there.

“The new gym would allow us to host basketball, volleyball and badminton games here at our own school — something that this school has never been able to do before,” Steele said. “This new facility will also help us reach our goals for daily phys-ed for all students right here at this school and not have to go across to Harrison anymore.”

The new gymnasium will include new change rooms, space for storage, office space, washrooms and a kitchenette.
