The investigation into a fire at a downtown home on Saturday night has focused on a stove that was left on, police say.

A family of three who lived there wasn’t harmed, including a 14-year-old boy who was home alone playing video games when the fire began and made it out safely.

“I was just playing video games upstairs and then I just smelled smoke,” said the boy — the family has asked that they not be named at this point. “I went downstairs and the entire place was full of smoke. I couldn’t see.”

The boy’s parents had briefly stepped out to the grocery store. His father said that, once outside, the teen called his mother using a cellphone to let her know he was OK and the couple quickly returned home.

Firefighters and police were called to the scene on the 100-block of Second Street by a neighbour around 9:20 p.m. and police blocked off streets in the area. Extensive flame was visible in the first floor of the home, but firefighters appeared to get the fire quickly under control.

While it’s believed that the fire began when a stove was left on, a specific account of what was burning isn’t available yet. The boy said he didn’t know what caught alight.

Brandon Fire and Emergency Services Capt. Ralph Moore said there’s no indication the fire is suspicious.

The home was destroyed, Moore said. It sustained fire damage in its lower level and heavy smoke damage to its upper level.

Moore roughly estimated the damage to be $150,000.

Firefighters managed to save three pet birds from the building, Moore said. However, it appears two other birds perished.
