Two men were arrested after they robbed a downtown pharmacy in broad daylight on Monday, making off with cash and prescription drugs in a stolen truck from Saskatoon.
Just before 1:50 p.m., police were called to the Super Thrifty Medical Centre Pharmacy in the 100-block of 6th Street after two men wearing black masks stormed the store.
“One of them had an eight-inch knife,” Brandon Police Service Sgt. Kevin McLean said. “They robbed the place and then left down the back lane toward Rosser Avenue.”
Two police cruisers, a forensic identification unit and two plainclothes investigators patrolled the area shortly after the robbery. Witnesses described seeing a black truck flee the area.
Members of Brandon police’s criminal investigation unit, who were investigating other robberies, managed to locate the suspect truck along with the two men in the Glendale Bay area.
Police said they found prescription medication and clothing worn during the robbery in the stolen truck. The store was closed for part of Monday afternoon before opening to customers again.
One customer, who left the store hours after the robbery, couldn’t believe how bold the thieves were.
“It’s really scary,” she said, asking the Brandon Sun to protect her anonymity.
“This is the drugstore we use always and I’m glad, relieved that no one was hurt.”
She was also concerned about what kind of drugs were stolen from the pharmacy and whether they would end up on the street.
“It isn’t something the layperson should be dealing with or taking,” she said. “I hope no one, not the bad guys or their friends get hurt.”
A 29-year-old-man from Brandon is facing three counts of robbery with an offensive weapon. The accused is also believed to have been involved in other robberies within the city, according to police.
A second man from Saskatoon is also facing robbery charges. The two men are expected to appear in court Tuesday morning.
