Brandon Boxing Club got an unexpected plug prior to the Maclean’s National Leaders Debate.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau was photographed ahead of the debate in a Toronto boxing gym sporting red Brandon Boxing Club hand wraps, given to him by club owner and local boxer Noel Harding.

“The first thing that caught my attention was my club wraps that I gave him, I thought that was kinda cool,” Harding said.

Trudeau made several stops in Brandon during the Brandon-Souris byelection in 2013. Harding caught up with him at that time.

“I know that Trudeau is a boxing enthusiast, so me being the club owner… representative of the club in our city, I figured it was only adequate that I would go and offer him a free session,” Harding said. “He told me that he was going to take me up on that in one of his future visits, so I’m hoping he will hold true to that.”

Thursday’s photo-op wasn’t the first time Trudeau’s boxing made headlines. He won a charity match against former Conservative Senator Patrick Brazeau in 2012.

“Justin’s a pretty decent boxer, he understands the sport,” Harding said. “I watched his fight a couple years back. I thought he came from behind to win, that shows a lot of heart, and that’s what it takes to be a boxer, and a politician I’m sure.”
