Brandon Wheat Kings forward Nolan Patrick scored the winner on Monday as Canada’s under-18 team opened the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup by beating the host Czech Republic 3-1.

Patrick’s goal came off a redirection of a shot by Pierre-Luc Dubois of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles at 15:11 of the first period, nine minutes after a shorthanded effort by Dillon Dube of the Kelowna Rockets had tied the game at 1-1. Matyáš Kantner of the Czech Republic scored three minutes into the game to give his team an early lead.

Patrick had an opportunity to extend the lead on a penalty shot in the second period, but the puck got away from him near Czech netminder Adam Brizgala.

Kale Clague and Tanner Kaspick of the Wheat Kings were also on the ice for Canada, which plays Sweden today at 8:30 a.m., with their final game of the round robin on Wednesday against Switzerland, also at 8:30 a.m.
