The Brandon Sun has been named as a finalist for an international journalism award for its feature “Breaking Faith.”
The story delves into the family of Henry Lawrence, who suffered from asbestosis, and how they have taken up their father’s crusade against the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba after his widow was denied death benefits.
The announcement by Editor & Publisher comes after several weeks of deliberation by a panel of 81 judges. Now in its 20th year, the international contest, which aims to honour the best media-affiliated websites, saw more than 400 entries competing in 31 categories.
The Sun is nominated for an EPPY Award for best investigative/enterprise feature on a website with under one million unique monthly visitors.
The four-person project included reporting by Matt Goerzen, web development by Andrew Nguyen, photos and video by Bruce Bumstead as well as editing by Jim Lewthwaite.
The Athens Banner-Herald (“Educating Georgia”), The Center for Public Integrity (“Environmental Justice, Denied”), Southern California Public Radio (“LAUSD’s iPads”), Nieman Reports (“Where Are the Women?”) and The Topeka Capital-Journal (“Sam Brownback’s brother Jim Brownback accused of terrorizing rural neighbours”) are also nominated in the same category.
The results will be announced on Oct. 28 at 12:30 p.m.
