A longtime Brandon School Division trustee will vie for the Brandon West seat in the upcoming provincial election.
Linda Ross is the acclaimed NDP candidate for the constituency, following a nomination meeting on Wednesday night.
“Public service is really important to me and I think in this election particularly, one of the most important motivating factors for me, is considering the alternative,” Ross said. “I’m concerned about the alternative, so I thought that I would be a credible candidate to represent the NDP in Brandon West and give the other parties a run for their money.”
Ross has been a member of BSD board of trustees for the past 22 years and is currently an associate professor in the psychology department at Brandon University.
She said she has worked “behind the scenes” politically over the years, and decided to step into the forefront this year.
The major concerns for the community, according to Ross, are health and education.
“Making sure that the funding is maintained at a reasonable level so that we can continue to offer the kinds of services that are currently offered to Manitobans,” she said.
Ross is encouraged by the NDP’s plans to assist in BU’s housing project, relocation of Assiniboine Community College to the North Hill campus, as well as ongoing flood mitigation work.
“There are lots of local … issues that we need to make sure we have our voices heard,” she said.
Ross was born and raised in Winnipeg. She spent two years in Toronto before accepting a position at BU in 1987.
“I’ve been here a long time now and raised my family here, so it’s definitely home,” she said.
Ross will challenge Progressive Conservative incumbent Reg Helwer for the seat. The Liberal party has yet to name a candidate for the constituency.
