Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 31/03/2016 (3708 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
An intriguing season of theatre is planned at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre Mainstage for 2016-17, and 7 Ages Productions will be taking a busload of Brandonites to Winnipeg to enjoy it.
As he has done for more than 30 years, theatre buff George Buri will be reserving some prime seats at the Mainstage for the Wednesday matinee shows.
Patrons travel in a luxurious Brandon Bus Lines coach to attend all six shows, leaving Brandon at 11 a.m. to catch the 2 p.m. performance, arriving back in Brandon in time for a late supper.
“It’s a great day out,” says Buri, “and people do not need to drive themselves, worrying about bad weather, fatigue or Exchange District parking. The next season is one of the best I’ve seen for years — I highly recommend it.”
The first play, on Nov. 2, is the award-winning “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” based on the popular novel. Then on Nov. 24, great Canadian actress Fiona Reid stars as the Queen in “The Audience.”
Early in the new year, Jan. 5, 2017, is the date for “Million Dollar Quartet.” This electrifying show features performances inspired by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins.
For mystery fans, Feb. 9 features an Agatha Christie-Hercule Poirot story, “Black Coffee.”
Then on March 16, “Bittergirl: the Musical” — called a “sparkling, hit-filled celebration of misfortune” by The Guardian — is on the bill.
The season ends with a new historical drama by renowned playwright Maureen Hunter, set in the Red River Settlement, entitled “Sarah Ballenden.”
Many of the subscribers to the theatre trip package have been attending for years.
“It is wonderful to have such quality theatre so close to home,” says Bev Bailey. “George makes it so easily accessible.” Other patrons suggest it is “some of the best you can see in Canada,” and “If you like theatre, it’s the obvious thing to do.”
The total cost for the season is $480, which works out to $80 per trip (that includes theatre ticket and bus). For ease of budgeting, theatre-goers can pay in instalments of $160 by post-dated cheques dated April 15, 2016, Oct. 1, 2016, and Jan. 1, 2017.
Make cheques payable to 7 Ages Productions and mail them to 23 Woodhaven Drive, Brandon, MB, R7B 3N2. Deadline to reserve seats is April 15.
