Brad Bowles of Elkhorn scored twice as the Portage Terriers improved to 2-0 at the Western Canada Cup late Sunday night.
Adam Wowryk supplied the other marker while Elkhorn’s Brett Orr picked up an assist in the Terriers’ 3-2 win over the host Estevan Bruins (0-2). With the win, Portage has secured a playoff berth and will play for one of two berths in the national junior A championship, the RBC Cup, awarded to Western Canada on the weekend.
Monday’s game between the Melfort Mustangs (0-1) and Brooks Bandits (1-0) was in progress at press time.
Meanwhile, Orr was named the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s defensive player of the month after recording five points in the championship series against the Steinbach Pistons. He, along with Bowles, was a runner-up to the Piston Cole Smith for player of the month.
Nathan Park of the Terriers was named goalie of the month, while Portage’s Jeremey Leipsic earned top rookie honours.
