Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 08/10/2016 (3493 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
Attention, passengers: Brandon’s new airport terminal is open for business.
Friday marked the first flight out of the new facility, which offers travellers a spacious and modern boarding lounge.
The WestJet counter, security screening, baggage check and all other daily airport operations were moved into the new terminal building Thursday evening.
“‘It’s so nice and bright,’ we keep hearing. ‘It’s so nice and big,’ and there were a couple of people actually that thought that was the finished product,” said Carla Richardson, director of transportation with the City of Brandon.
Departing passengers will now be required to access Brandon Municipal Airport via the new front entrance.
“There will be no change to the current process for arrival service,” stated a City of Brandon public notice.
“Passengers arriving on inbound flights will still be required to de-board their aircraft and walk around the terminal to access the temporary arrivals trailer and gather their checked luggage prior to leaving the airport facility.”
The new terminal is part of a $10.4-million airport overhaul.
Attention will now turn to the old terminal building — Phase 2 of the project. It will be gutted and renovated, and once complete will “flow seamlessly” with the new addition, according to Richardson.
Temporary walls will be used in the new facility for security reasons, until the existing terminal building is renovated. Phase 2 of the project is slated for completion in February or early March.
The project, which began last November, is cost-shared by the city, province and federal governments.
Once complete, the terminal will be three times the size of the original building, with the old terminal hosting the departures lounge and the new addition including the arrivals hall.
The revamped parking lot is delayed due to weather, but Richardson hopes it will be complete by the end of next week.
In the meantime, the public is asked to continue parking to the west of the terminal building.
“There’s still a little bit of an operational bump,” she said.
“They still have to park over in the overflow areas, and then you’ll follow the long sidewalk going from the west to the east, and go in to the main terminal. Then it’s just a delightful experience once you get into the terminal, but it’s a bit of a walk.”
While WestJet axed the eastbound route to Toronto, the Brandon-Calgary route remains strong.
Beginning Oct. 23, an early morning flight departing at 6 a.m. to Calgary has been added on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
