The pressure inside Brandon’s Westman place rose a few notches Friday afternoon as men’s and women’s teams jockeyed for position in the Home Hardware Canada Cup of Curling standings.
The final results will be determined in tonight’s final draw but one thing that is guaranteed is there will be at least one tiebreaker.
Maybe more.
After Kerri Einarson scored two with a draw to the button in the 10th that forced an extra end with Kelsey Roque, the Winnipeg skip came up light with her final stone in 11 and Rocque, who was sitting one, picked up her first win of the week and ensured there will be at least one tiebreaker Saturday morning.
That’s because Edmonton’s Val Sweeting used steals in one and nine to knock off the previously unbeaten Jennifer Jones 6-4 to finish round-robin play with a 3-3 record. With Jones (4-1) and Rachel Homan (4-1) already having secured playoff berths in the morning — the two former Canada Cup champions will play this evening for a spot in Sunday’s women’s final — Sweeting earned a tiebreaker after Roque (1-4) beat Einarson, who fell to 2-3.
Einarson will play Calgary’s Chelsea Carey (2-3) for a tiebreaker spot and if Tracy Fleury (2-3) of Sudbury, Ont., takes care of business against Rocque there will be two tiebreakers.
There isn’t a guarantee any tiebreakers on the men’s side of the draw but if John Epping, who started 0-3, dispatches of Brad Jacobs (3-2) tonight, there will be at least one.
Epping kept his hopes alive by beating Steve Laycock 8-6 on the strength of an eighth-end steal of two.
But Laycock (3-3) is still alive for a tiebreaker himself, granted Jacobs falls to Epping.
Speaking of Jacobs, the Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., skipper was facing Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers in the afternoon. Tied 1-1 through seven ends in a game that featured five blanks, Caruthers scored two in eight and stole two more in nine when Jacobs’ double-takeout attempt failed.
Carruthers (4-2) won 5-1 and will play in Saturday’s men’s semifinal, while the Mark Nichols-led Team Gushue (4-2) will play in Sunday’s final courtesy of round-robin wins over Carruthers and Jacobs.
This despite Team Gushue falling 8-6 to hometown product Mike McEwen 8-6 in an extra end. If Jacobs loses and McEwen beats last year’s winner Kevin Koe tonight, the kid from Brandon will find himself in a tiebreaker.
