Hey there, time traveller!

The plywood went up this week and the ice will go in as conditions allow, with the Global Market Brandon outdoor skating rink opening as soon as possible.
The rink is located at the community organization’s downtown space, at 12th Street and Rosser Avenue
With a grand opening slated for mid-January, organizers are striving to ensure everyone interested in skating at the public space is able to do so.
As such, they’re collecting helmets and skates, issuing a public plea for community members to help them out in their endeavour.
Skates and helmets can be dropped off at the Building Re-Fit Store, at 23 12th St., during regular hours of operation, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday.
They can also be contacted at 204-728-2227.
As of midday on Wednesday, they had collected three pairs of skates.
They’re looking for hockey helmets specifically and not bicycle helmets, intern Olivia Coyce said, noting that hockey helmets provide greater protection for those falling backward than bicycle helmets allow.
This is an important effort in ensuring that the skating rink is as inclusive, and safe, as possible, Coyce explained, noting that anyone in need of helmets and/or skates will be provided them during Building Re-Fit Store hours.
Their only limitation will be the number of helmets and skates members of the community donate.
While the rink will open as soon as weather conditions allow, Global Market Brandon also plans on hosting a grand opening celebration in mid-January.
Details are still being hashed out, but Coyce said that the intent is for it to be as large scale a community get-together as possible, with hot chocolate and other attractions.
But for now, they’re focused on promoting the donation of skates and helmets to ensure everyone’s able to enjoy the public rink.
