Lisa Wood, a visual arts assistant professor at Brandon University, is bringing her unique perspective on university cafeterias to Winnipeg.

The exhibition, “Cafeteria II,” is the product of collaboration with fellow artist Elvira Finnigan. Wood explores the dynamics of eating together and questions how the experience of sharing a meal might be recorded and remembered.

The joint exhibition at the University of Winnipeg’s Gallery 1C03 is a followup to last year’s collaborative, process-based exhibition, “Cafeteria,” when the artists transformed a gallery into a temporary dining hall and recorded participants eating their lunch together.

Wood used the time-lapse photographs of cafeteria diners to create drawings and paint studies of them in all forms, from mid-bite and to an enthralled conversation with one another.

Condensing time and space while layering her subjects and bringing them together, Wood creates intense views of crowded tables and people in a myriad of gestures, facial expressions and interactions — masterfully reflecting the hustle and bustle of a cafeteria lunch and capturing the spirited social and mental engagement of the campus community.

An illustrated publication, featuring an essay done by the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba’s curator Natalia Lebedenskaia, accompanies the exhibition.

“Cafeteria II” will be on display at Gallery 1C03 until April 8.
