Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 23/03/2017 (3205 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
Kale Clague of the Brandon Wheat Kings was named a member of the Eastern Conference’s first all-star team on Wednesday during a busy day in the Western Hockey League.
The 18-year-old defenceman from Lloydminster, Alta., was pleased with the honour.
“It means a lot,” he said after practice on Wednesday. “It’s nice to get recognized across the league as one of the top defencemen in the league. I was excited to see that. It’s rewarding with all the time I’ve put in all year but obviously I couldn’t do it without my teammates helping me along the way. We all play hard together so I couldn’t do it without them.”
He had five goals and 35 assists in 48 games this year.
Clague has had a memorable year, winning a WHL title with the Wheat Kings last May, getting drafted in the second round of the National Hockey League draft in June, playing with Team Canada at the world juniors in December and January, signing a pro deal earlier this month and now earning all-star honours.
“It’s pretty incredible when you look back on it,” Clague said. “The teams we’ve had here in Brandon have been outstanding and the players on the teams we’ve had, none of this happens without them. I couldn’t be more grateful to be part of this organization.”
Strathclair’s Morgan Geekie was named to the Western Conference second all-star team after a breakout season in which he scored 35 goals and added 55 assists in 72 games.
The league also held its bantam draft lottery for the six non-playoff teams, with the Prince Albert Raiders having their ball drawn and moving up two spots to take the top pick. That moved the Kootenay Ice to second, the Vancouver Giants to third, and didn’t affect the Edmonton Oil Kings (fourth), Saskatoon Blades (fifth) and Spokane Chiefs (sixth).
Brandon will pick eighth in the 2017 WHL bantam draft. Oddly, the Wheat Kings have never had the eighth overall pick in the first round since the draft was instituted in 1990.
This year’s draft — which can select players from Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming — will target youngsters born in 2002.
In playoff news, the Wheat Kings announced on Wednesday afternoon that fewer than 500 tickets remain for Games 3 and 4 of their series with the Medicine Hat Tigers, which will be played in Dauphin’s Credit Union Centre on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Tickets, which are $25 for adults or $15 for anyone under the age of 17, may be obtained by visiting the Wheat Kings’ office in Brandon or by calling (204) 726-3535. There will be a “will call” window for pickup in Dauphin that opens on Monday.
